The Comet Club brings big-name chef, luxe vibes to Westbury

A high-profile restaurant collaboration is set to land in Westbury this spring.

The Comet Club, a new concept from two-time James Beard Award nominee chef Jesse Schenker and Claudia Taglich of Oyster Bay’s Lush Life Group, is opening at 990 Corporate Drive inside The Vanderbilt, a luxury residential and hotel property developed by the Beechwood Organization.

“We want to give our residents and guests an elegant and exclusive dining experience possible only at The Vanderbilt,” said Steven Dubb, principal and president of Beechwood. “Our ambience together with Lush’s chic and engaging concept will create an experience that we’re pretty sure people will want to return to enjoy again and again.”

Schenker, Taglich Team With the Dubbs on New Westbury Restaurant

Jesse Schenker, a two-time James Beard Award-nominee chef, and Claudia Taglich, his partner at Lush Life Group, are joining forces with real estate developers Michael Dubb and Steven Dubb of The Beechwood Organization, to launch a new restaurant, The Comet Club, this spring at 990 Corporate Drive in Westbury.

Located within the Vanderbilt, Beechwood’s luxury apartment and hotel residence, The Comet Club positions itself as a new dining destination, combining Beechwood’s track record in high-end development with Lush Life Group’s culinary and hospitality expertise.

The Comet Club combines design elements inspired by New York’s Gilded Age and the Miami and Havana cocktail lounges of the 1920s. The menu features coastal dishes, raw bar selections, prime cuts and continental offerings, with cocktail service and tableside preparation. The multi-room layout includes a 12-seat bar, piano lounge, dining room, seasonal patio and private event space.

While the restaurant emphasizes high-end design, the menu centers on quality ingredients and approachable offerings, including house-baked breads. Menu items include house-made sourdough focaccia with Parmigiano Reggiano, prime ribeye French dip with bone marrow–enhanced au jus on a house-made baguette, and dry-aged roasted duck fajitas on house-made masa tortillas with salsa macha.

And with a nod to The Comet, the stylish mid-20th-century rail service known for its elegant dining, dessert carts and trolleys will circulate nightly with rotating pies, cakes and seasonal selections.

New York–based architecture and interior design studio Sugarhouse designed the 5,000-square-foot space for The Comet Club. The studio’s co-principals Jess and Jonathan Nahon developed a multi-room layout, incorporating a textured color palette, warm finishes and plant-inspired accents. The details and lighting are intended to reference the golden age of rail travel, while supporting both private and communal dining experiences. The result suggests a classic supper club with a contemporary, relaxed vibe.

The Comet Club will be open to the public seven nights for dinner, with early evening bar service available starting at 4 p.m. Dinner will be served nightly starting at 5 p.m.  – Sunday until 9 p.m., Monday-Thursday until 9:30 p.m. and Friday-Saturday until 10 p.m. Lunch and brunch service will be added soon.

The Selby: Home to the Long Island Nets

We're proud to welcome the Long Island Nets to The Selby. In a new video brought to us by Homegrown, forward Tre Scott takes us on a walkthrough of the building — and it's clear from the moment he steps inside that this is more than just a place to sleep during the season.

Tre talks through what sets The Selby apart: direct access to The Shed, the building's sleek and modern design, and standout amenities like the library and full weight room. His teammates are equally sold — the fitness center, game room (stocked with pool, poker, and blackjack), and the convenience of underground parking make it easy to settle in and focus on what matters.

For a roster of professional athletes with high standards and busy schedules, The Selby delivers on every front. It's not just a residence — it's a level of living that stands apart.

The Farm Italy Expands to Westbury

The new restaurant brings the same Tuscan-themed charm
BY MARIE ELENA MARTINEZ

When The Farm Italy debuted in Huntington in 2023, it was one of the biggest openings of the year, transforming a Huntington Village steakhouse into a sprawling Tuscan fantasy. On Saturday, it welcomed a sibling as The Farm Italy opened in Westbury.

Similar to the Huntington original, the design mimics a sweeping Italian countryside estate, transporting guests as they enter the stunning space. Featur- ing two large dining rooms and a swank bar dotted with skylights, multitiered chandeliers, and chartreuse colored corner banquettes, the restaurant is bathed in natural light highlighting its earthy fabric - buttery wood floors, white stone walls, black leather chairs, muted ceramic tableware. Not to be missed: the serene, covered outdoor terrace, complete with fire pit, that adds 70 seats to the 150 inside. Located at 725 Merrick Ave., this Farm is part of
a collaboration with luxury devel- oper Beechwood Homes, situated just yards away from The Selby, an upscale apartment community an- chored by another of founder John Tunney's restaurants, The Shed.

Chef Roberto Baez replicates the same seasonal menu featured in Huntington here, with starters like tagliolini ($23), a creamy, cheesy pasta dish made with pecorino, eggs and coppa. There's a shareable an- tipasto platter ($32), mussels ($21), yellowfin tuna crudo ($27), and roasted artichoke ($18) with herbs in bagna cauda aioli, anchovy-rich and full of umami. Classics including calamari ($24), baked clams ($16), burrata on crostini ($19) round out the starters.

In the pasta category, don't miss the signature cacio e pepe ($26), which can be found on most ta- bles, but also pappardelle Bolog- nese ($32), and more seasonal offerings like spaghetti with lob- ster in a creamy, fra diavolo sauce, and ribbonlike malfadine with jumbo lump crab, gremolata butter, breadcrumb and Fresno chile ($33). For entrees, requisite chicken, veal ($49) and eggplant Parms sit alongside branzino fillets ($41), NY strip ($72), a grilled pork chop with romesco, fingerling potatoes and watercress ($46), and a braised lamb shank with a black currant demi-glace ($40). The Farm Italy's beverages include craft cocktails like the lemony honey bourbon ($17), wine and mocktails.

"This is more than just an open- ing, it's an evolution of our vision," Tunney said in a statement. While The Farm Italy was originally going to be a one-off concept, according to Tunney, the construction of The Shed next door inspired the restaura- teur. "I liked that whole corridor," he told Newsday when announcing the expansion. "It's getting redeveloped, it's close to - but out of the chaos of Roosevelt Field. It faces Eisen- hower Park, which gives it this nice open feeling. And there's great park- ing."

In addition to its flagship in Hunt- ington, earlier this year, Tunney opened an outpost of The Farm Italy within Connecticut's Mohegan Sun resort.

The new Westbury location is serving dinner for now, with lunch reservations to follow in the coming weeks.
The Farm Italy, 725 Merrick Ave., Westbury, 516-862-1212, thefarmItaly.com. Open 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
The Westbury location of The Farm Italy is designed in a similar sweeping Italian countryside estate style.

Critics’ picks: Where to eat for Long Island Restaurant Week

Juniper (990 Corporate Dr., Westbury)
Once the domain of Tom Schaudel’s Kingfish, this year-old New American eatery is still a bit under-the-radar, perhaps owing to its location on the ground floor of the Vanderbilt, a high-end apartment complex. But Restaurant Week is about new adventures, and this chic spot (monochromatic look, blond wood accents, potted juniper trees, the latter native to LI) is worth seeking out. Entree highlights include roasted Cascun Farms half-chicken and Faroe Island grilled salmon, while the wild mushroom flatbread makes for a fine and substantial appetizer. And while we haven’t tried them, the desserts, especially the Tahitian vanilla cheesecake with brown butter crust, certainly sound like they're worth saving room for. The Selby Debuts At 695 Merrick Avenue In Westbury, Long Island

BY: SEBASTIAN MORRIS 7:00 AM ON OCTOBER 17, 2022

Occupancy has begun at The Selby, a 237-unit apartment complex at 695 Merrick Avenue in Westbury, New York. The complex is the latest residential development from The Beechwood Organization, a Long Island-based developer that has built nearly 10,000 homes since the 1980s.

The Selby sits on a 5.87-acre parcel next to the town’s Eisenhower Park and golf course. The complex itself measures 582,000 square feet and includes 210 rental apartments, 27 long-term stay executive suites, and a 6,000-square-foot restaurant.

Tenants also have access to a 85-foot-long outdoor pool with lounge areas, a 20,000-square-foot terrace, an indoor lounge and club room, fitness center, spa, library, game room, children’s playroom, business center, and a private dining room with a prep kitchen. There is also an enclosed parking garage with electric vehicle charging stations.

“We created The Selby to reflect the most refined tastes in sophisticated apartment living to be found east of New York City,” said The Beechwood Organization co-founder Steven Dubb. “These are Long Island’s nicest residences, with the nicest lifestyle and in the nicest location, across from Eisenhower Park in central Nassau County.”

Upon entering the building, tenants are greeted by a two-story lobby outfitted in custom millwork, a jeweled chandelier, and etched brass accents. Each home features 10-foot ceiling spans, open floor plans, oversized windows to maximize the flow of natural light and views of Eisenhower Park, and designer fixtures and appliances.

Designed by Ismael Leyva Architects, The Selby is described as French chateau-style revival inspired by the prewar residential buildings along Central Park West in Manhattan.

Homes at The Selby are priced from $3,200 per month for a studio apartment to $9,500 for a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home.

The Selby, LI’s Newest Luxury Apartment Complex, Opens In Westbury

The 237-unit building features units ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments, and tons of amenities.

WESTBURY, NY — The Selby, a new luxury apartment complex in Westbury, opened earlier this year, and is currently accepting residents.

The Selby, located at 695 Merrick Ave. in Westbury, is a 237-unit building. The six-story building sits on 5.87 acres directly across the street from Eisenhower Park. It is managed by the Long Island-based Beechwood Organization, and was designed by Ismael Leyva Architects.

“We created The Selby to reflect the most refined tastes in sophisticated apartment living to be found east of New York City," said developer Steven Dubb, principal at The Beechwood Organization. "These are Long Island’s nicest residences, with the nicest lifestyle and in the nicest location, across from Eisenhower Park in central Nassau County. We are delighted to present The Selby and to welcome our new residents.”

The Selby features many amenities for its residents, including a 75-foot outdoor pool and 20,000 square feet of recreation space. There is a grand salon, club room with indoor/outdoor bar, fitness studio with a yoga room, a tranquility spa, an on-site library, game room, children's playroom, business center and a private dining room. A restaurant is also in the works for the building.

The apartments range from 500-square-foot studios to 2,200-square-foot three-bedroom units. Rent starts at $3,200 a month and goes up to $9,500 a month.

Beechwood also manages The Vanderbilt, located on Corporate Drive in Westbury.

“Those who live in our luxury residences enjoy a high standard of living. They are young couples or professionals with dynamic lifestyles who want turn-key living outside of, but not too far from, New York City," Dubb said. "They want to stay or live on the Island but are not ready or looking to buy. They may also be empty nesters who relish the space, comfort and privacy of a long-held family abode but not the responsibility of owning it. Whether year-round or part of the year, our residents want a new, well-constructed home with resort amenities and concierge services reflective of their coveted quality of life."

The Selby Pool Terrace Fire Pits

Architect Ismael Leyva, FAIA, has designed the new mixed-use property known as The Selby, located at 695 Merrick Ave. The architecture firm was retained by The Beechwood Organization to design the project. The Selby is open for occupancy according to Steven Dubb, principal, The Beechwood Organization.

The development contains 386,000 s/f of residential space and stands six stories. Included in the design are 237 residences, which include 210 rental apartments and 27 long-term stay hotel suites, a 6,000 s/f restaurant, and retail space. A full complement of amenities for tenants include a library lounge area, a club room with indoor-outdoor bar, children’s playroom, fitness studio, 75 ft. outdoor swimming pool and 200,000 s/f terrace, storage and private parking with electric charging station.

“We are thrilled to have worked with The Beechwood Organization on this exciting development,” said Leyva. “In designing this development, we wanted to create a functional yet modern structure with a design reference to the French chateau facades that you often see in the surrounding fine residential areas of Westbury and this region of Long Island. We designed the modern residences for those who desire to have an array of luxury amenities at their fingertips, but also within a design envelope which is a tribute to the historic charm of Westbury.”

The Selby is located on six acres with views of Eisenhower Park, just steps from the front doors of the residences. The interior design of The Selby is in a Refined Traditional Style. A contemporary design interpretation combined with traditional elements, materials and details, that create a balance between comfort and sophistication from the lobby, library and club room to the grand salon, pool terrace and each residence ranging in size from studio to three bedrooms.

“The building has a majestic feel, with unparalleled amenities in a location which maximizes views of Eisenhower Park. The stately and beautiful design captures much of the architectural vernacular seen across Old Westbury, and is reminiscent of the Gold Coast’s Gilded Age estates, as well as New York City’s grand historic co-ops overlooking Central Park,” said Dubb.

“I am grateful to Steven Dubb and The Beechwood Organization who engaged us to design this iconic new residential structure in the heart of the Long Island Gold Coast. We are thrilled to bring this level of luxury design and amenity to future residents of The Selby,” said Leyva.

Ismael Leyva, FAIA, is a Manhattan based architect, known for his iconic residential design projects such as The Greenpoint in Brooklyn, The Alyn in the Upper East Side, and the residences at 15 Hudson Yards, and numerous other developments throughout New York City and the metropolitan region.

Located in central Nassau County, it is 25 miles from New York City, a short distance to air and commuter friendly rail transport, and minutes from local shopping, dining, sports venues, arts and entertainment centers, and picturesque beaches.
